Also painted to match the valve cover.

This might be a dumb question, but what motor/vehicle is that?

Nah, not a dumb question. It is a Ford 300 I6 in a 1966 F100.

I thought it looked familiar, I just didn't want to sound stupid. I had a friend in high school (only three years ago) that had a 1978 Granada with an I6 in it. It made a great noise but the performance was lacking. Clean car though. 62kmiles.

Yup, it would look pretty close to this only in a 200ci displacement (I think). This I6 also is lacking in power but it is a torque-y thing , and makes all of its power pretty much at idle. This one also have a good bit more than 62k on it. This particular F100 has been through (2) 240s and now this 300. The truck has 480k on it, and I bet the old 300 has at least 150k.
I thought it deserved a new top end.........and a turbo.

it was definitely really torque-y, but in all honesty I think that motor with the turbo will sound and perform fantastic.

It will sound amazing and have crazy amounts of torque! Right now it only has a single really small flowmaster on it and it sounds great. Once the turbo is on I think I will just straight pipe it to get the engine growl along with the turbo whistle. I am looking forward to it.

I have another dumb question as I don't know much about putting a turbo on an older car, but are you having to do a custom ecu/tune type of thing?

This particular 300 is old enough that there is no computer. It does have an electronic ignition system but it is pretty "dumb" no knock sensors or anything to help with timing, it only has a vacuum advance timing system.
Because you have to retard the timing with a turbo, you can go about this mainly in one of two ways with an older engine like this. 1) You can just pull the timing back yourself and do what is call a "lock out" so that it never advances past a certain degree so you do not start getting detonation. Or 2) And this is what I will be doing. You can get vacuum/boost controllers that will retard timing for you depending on how much boost you are making. I will be using this MSD Boost Timing Master along with my MSD ignition. So I will set it that every 1PSI of boost I make it will pull timing 2.5 degrees. Here is a link to an MSD BTM: http://www.msdignition.com/Products/Ignit…

That was more simple than I expected actually. It's amazing what one can learn on oppo. I'm so used to being around and working newer cars that I never really get to tinker with older motors like that. It almost makes me want to buy an older car and make a project out of it. Thanks for answering the questions!

No problem! It is fun to work on older stuff because they are so simple. My other car is a tuned TL, working on it and working on the F100 are completely different and fun and challenging in their own ways. I would highly recommend getting an older car for a project.

Are you gonna boost reference a carby yourself or buy one off the shelf?
Or another idea, use LPG. It'll be cheap to run, it loves boost and the cold charge will help with heat transfer you'd get from the exhaust being next to the intake.

I actually had thought about going LPG but this engine will maybe in in this truck another year. So simplicity/budget is key. With that being said, this is my for shits and gigs quicky build so I have an extra Holley 4 barrel sitting around. But no need to boost reference because this is going to be a draw-through set up. I have done a few blow-throughs but never a draw-through and figured this would be a good engine to try it out on, especially since I will be sticking to around 8psi of boost.
And for cooling I have an extra carb water/meth injection kit laying around as well, so that should keep it cool enough.

clean forgot about draw through being an option. I think, from when I was looking at turboing my 250 I6, that draw through sounded tempremental. But having the experience of a few previous set ups, I'd guess you'd have it in the bag. Yeah you're right, not worth the trouble of installing tank, lines, converter and mixer if it's an in the mean time build. What's the plan for after the big six?

I really want to keep it a I6 and I REALLY wanted to get a turbo Barra shipped over from Australia but then I started thinking about it, parts would be a bitch to find, and I drive this truck a lot. So I started thinking about other big-ish I6 options that would be easy to find and easy to get parts for. And this is going to piss a bunch of people off but I am going to go with a Chevy LL8 4.2L I6, and it too will be getting a turbo after I get all the other stuff nailed down.

Yeah, I love those barra motors. Have been wanting to put one into my Cortina but its a little tricky. The sump forms part of the structure of the motor (can't remember exactly but I think they support the main caps or something along those lines), and the sump won't fit over my k-frame. Don't have the dosh to get one made to suit nor to modify the front end to make it fit. It has been done before though. In a 1200kg car, even a stock one would be an animal in it. I don't think parts would be too expensive over there, service wise anyways. Pretty sure they use the same 3/4 inch oil filter as other fords, gaskets can be made and the supporting hardware could be after market. Would have a few people scratching their heads at events. Not clued in on that Chev ll8. Will have to look it up. But fuck the purists. With out sounding like a dick, just as my car is old, it'll never be a million dollar concourse restoration worthy bit of gear so I don't see it as sacrilege. Not to mention an engine swap isn't a permanent change, just as that Chev motor went in, another from the makers stable could just as easily be put in.
